Railroad: Northern Pacific Railway
Caption: "NP Roundhouse Lester WA about 1905 Copy negative from Fred identity unknown Lester was located at the base of the steepest part of the grade up the west side of stampede pass. The engines shown in this view are for use as helpers up the pass. While the scan does not support the reading of numbers these engines are quite likely class Y-3 2-8-0's built by Alco at their Schenectady works in 1901 and 1903. The turntable is of the "Armstrong" variety meaning that the crew got on the ground and shoved the table around by means of poles extending from each end of the table. One of these poles can be observed at the end of the table in the middle of the photo in front of the sixth man from the left."
