Location: Rivulet, MT
Photographer: Ron V. Nixon
Railroad: Northern Pacific Railway
Caption: "NP Extra 5141 West stopped at the west switch, Rivulet, Montana. The west siding switch was a spring switch, which required special block signals. There was a "dwarf" signal governing a train exiting the siding. This signal was located just behind the photographer, and its placement between the tracks necessitated a slight curve in the siding. A spring switch allowed a train in the siding to exit without having to stop for the brakeman to close the switch behind the train. Spring switches were typically installed at locations where such a stop would be operationally undesirable, such as with ascending grades (which made it difficult for the locomotive to start the train again) or sharp curvature (which made signalling the engine crew from the caboose difficult or impossible)."

Date: March 01, 1946
Location: Spring Gulch, MT
Photographer: Ron V. Nixon
Railroad: Northern Pacific Railway
Caption: "NP Extra 5141 West stopped in the siding at Spring Gulch, Montana. This train ran from Missoula to Paradise via the Rocky Mountain Division's Fifth Subdivision, nicknamed variously by crews as "the low line" (for its river grade along the Clark Fork) or "the snake" (because of its numerous curves). The Sixth Subdivision, known as "the high line," extended bewteen DeSmet and Paradise, via Evaro hill and Dixon. Through passenger trains operated via the high line, and most freights operated via the low line. Although there were places along the low line that permitted higher speeds, most freight trains operated at a steady 35-40 miles per hour. The high number and close proximity of these curves didn't allow a tonnage freight sufficient distance to accelerate much above these speeds. This line was very scenic, causing more than one young fireman to get himself into trouble by "gawking" out the window instead of tending the fire."
