Caption: "NP Passenger Extra 2235 East on Miwaulkee Road track leaves Missoula. The reason for the detour is the derailment on the NP, east of Missoula, of wrecker no. 47. (See RVN 09581-09595). Engineer Marcellus "Jumbo" McClain is handling Class Q-5 no. 2235. His fireman's date is February 23, 1906, and he was promoted to engineer on June 6, 1913. Alco built no. 2235 in November 1920, and the NP scrapped it at Brainerd in October 1952. The 4-6-2 type locomotive is handling a heavy troop train, but ahead lies a fairly easy river grade run along the Clark Fork."

Caption: "NP Passenger Extra 5115 East is stopped at the Missoula depot on April 24, 1946. Engine 5115 is a Class Z-6 4-6-6-4 type locomotive. Its 69-inch drivers and large boiler allow this engine to handle freight trains or passengers trains. These were fairly versatile engines. This is a troop train, likely hauling troops who are very happy to return home from the Pacific Theater of operations in World War II, several months after the war ended."

Caption: "NP Passenger Extra 2682 West arrives Missoula, Montana, on April 25, 1946. Engine 2682 is a Class A-5 4-8-4 type locomotive, equipped with 77-inch drivers. This is a troop train likely carrying troops returning from the European Theater of Operations in World War II, nearly a year after the war in Europe ended. For many months after the end of the war, there a long draw-down period while some American military personnel remained behind to help restore law and order in Europe. The yard engine in the background is likely an Alco S-2 in the 700 series. Engine 709 was one of the S-2s assigned to Missoula Yard at this time."
