Date: April 29, 1900
Location: Portland, OR
Photographer: VB
Railroad: Northern Pacific Railway
Caption: "NP 300 OS on first North Coast Ltd cy VB Engine 300 is a 4-6-0 Nixon's caption on this copy negative does not indicate a date or location However the date of NCL inauguration is known, and the picture is widely believed to have been taken on the trackage alongside of the Columbia River between Portland and Goble, where the train would be put on a car ferry and be taken across the Columbia to Kalama on the Washington side Nixon's use of "OS" draws on his experience as a dispatcher. OS means "on sheet," signifying that a train has attained a certain location and can be so marked on the dispatchers train sheet, on which the movements of trains are recorded It is thus simple short hand to indicate that the new NCL is on its way This copy negative has been printed in a number of publications"
