Abstract

Normal alkanes containing from 8 to 37 carbons were found in 300-million-year-old limestone taken from the Mississippian Lodgepole formation in the Bridger Range of southcentral Montana. Normal alkanes were also detected in younger limestones from the same range. The predominance of odd to even carbon numbers that is often observed in sediments was not found.
