Abstract

Decarboxylation of the 2-cyano-2-phenylacetate ion in water is catalyzed by a number of cationic surfactants. The longer the surfactant's alkyl chain and the more hydrophobic its charged head, the greater is the surfactant's catalytic ability. Sodium Iauryl sulfate, an anionic surfactant, does not catalyze the decarboxylation.
