Abstract: One of the main factors contributing to the risk of natural avalanches is precipitaion. Measuring precipitation is known to be challenging, especially in weather conditions where strong winds can lead to extensive avalanche cycles, by accumulating snow from a larger area. The Icelandic Meteorological Office operates different types of precipitation gauges and conducted experiments, comparing their performance last winter (2023/2024). Results show striking differences in measurement between different types of precipitation gauges, where wind speed appears to be the most prominent impact factor
