Title: Integrating 2,4-D and sheep grazing to rehabilitate spotted knapweed infestations
Journal: Journal of Range Management
Authors: R. L. Sheley, J. S. Jacobs, and J. M. Martin
Date: 2004
Summary: A 4 year study examined four treatments (spring herbicide only, repeated sheep grazing only, spring herbicide and repeated sheep grazing though out the summer, no herbicide or grazing) to control spotted knapweed (Centaurea maculosa) populations at two sites in Western Montana. The first site was along Bitterroot River near Missoula, MT (46.83° N, 114.05° W) and the second site was on the flood plain of the Clark Fork River near Drummond, MT (46.79° N, 113.20° W). Utilization levels were set at 95% for knapweed and 60% for gras ...

Title: Spotted knapweed response to season and frequency of mowing
Journal: Journal of Range Management
Authors: M. J. Rinella, J. S. Jacobs, R. L. Sheley, and J. J. Borkowski
Date: 2001
Summary: The response of spotted knapweed and perennial grass to 16 mowing treatments (combinations of spring, summer, fall and no mowing) at 2 sites over 3 years. Site 1 was south of Belgrade, MT (45° 47' N; 111° 10' W) and site 2 was southwest of Bozeman, MT (45° 36' N; 111° 5' W). Sites were mowed with the blade set at 10 cm above ground surface. ...

Title: Effect of sheep grazing on a leafy spurge-infested Idaho fescue community
Journal: Journal of Range Management
Authors: B. E. Olson, and R. T. Wallander
Date: 1998
Summary: A three year study in Montana (45° 40' N; 111° 33' W) examined the cumulative effects of sheep grazing on leafy spurge (Euphorbia esula) infested rangelands. Plant density of Idaho fescue and bluebunch wheatgrass and stem density of Leafy spurge and frequency of other species were measured before each grazing season and nine months after the last grazing period. Ten soil core samples were taken before and after grazing to measure the viable seedbank of leafy spurge. ...

Title: Effects of underwater clipping of purple loosestrife in a southern Ontario wetland
Journal: Journal of Aquatic Plant Management
Authors: M. J. Haworth-Brockman, H. R. Murkin, R. T. Clay, and E. Armson
Date: 1991
Summary: Effects of a single underwater surface clipping on established mature purple loosestrife plants were examined over one growing season at Green Gables Marsh near Kingston, Ontario (44° 46' N, 76° 01' W). One hundred 3 x 3 m plots were identified and assigned to four treatments: uncut, or clipped 10 cm below water surface in June 16 (early summer), July 15 (mid-summer), or August 18 (late summer). Number of plants per plot was counted each month after treatments from June 16 and continued through October 15. ...

Title: Effects of clipping purple loosestrife seedlings during a simulated wetland drawdown
Journal: Journal of Aquatic Plant Management
Authors: T. S. Gabor, and H. R. Murkin
Date: 1990
Summary: The top 2 cm of soil from a flooded wetland near Smith Falls, Ontario with an established purple loosestrife population was collected and transported back to the greenhouse in south-central manitoba. Soil was placed into trays, watered to saturate soil surface and allowed to germinate. Seedlings were clipped at the soil surface 21, 42 or 63 days following germination. The number of seedlings per treatment was counted every week for 10 weeks. ...
