Title: Use of goats to manage vegetation in cattle pastures in the Appalachian region of North Carolina
Journal: Sheep and Goat Research Journal
Authors: J. M. Luginbuhl, J. T. Green, Jr., M. H. Poore, and A. P. Conrad
Date: 2000
Summary: A field study conducted near Waynesville, North Carolina (35.50° N, 83.00° W) examined if rotationally grazing goats and cattle was effective in management of an overgrown mountain pasture. Sites contained multiflora rose (Rosa multiflora), black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia) and brambles (Rubus spp). Three grazing treatments were tested: cattle grazing alone, cattle grazing with goats and no grazing. Animal numbers and season varied in response to moisture. Herbaceous vegetation was grazed until stubble h ...

Title: Grazing in a California silvopastoral system: Effects of defoliation season, intensity, and frequency on deerbrush, Ceanothus integerrimus Hook & Arn.
Journal: Agroforestry Systems
Authors: L. Huntsinger
Date: 1996
Summary: In a two-year series of grazing trials, Huntsinger examined the degree of cattle preference for deerbrush (Ceanothus integerrimus) as compared to conifers, and response of deerbrush to grazing on a forest site. The second, a three-year study based on grazing trial results, used clipping to examine the specifics of deerbrush response to patterns of herbivory. Deerbrush was highly preferred by cattle in the grazing trials. Even at 90% utilization of the shrubs, no conifers were browsed. High degrees of utilization did not suppress shrub growth in the grazing trials. The ...

Title: Effect of grazing and cultivation on some chemical properties of soils in the mixed prairie
Journal: Journal of Range Management
Authors: J. F. Dormaar, and W. D. Willms
Date: 1990
Summary: Dormaar and Willms studied the components of the organic matter in soil under 3 mixed prairie types: grassland dominated by needle-and-thread/blue grama (Stipa comata/Bouteloua gracilis) in good range condition; grassland significantly modified by grazing, dominated by blue grama and in poor range condition; and grassland, dominated by needle-and-thread/blue grama in good range condition, but converted to cropland and under continuous wheat for 4 years. Soils in grazed pastures had less monosaccharides and more microbial carbohydrates than soils insi ...
