- Title: Defoliation and cold-hardiness of northern wheatgrass
- Journal: Journal of Range Management
- Authors: B. L. Kowalenko, and J. T. Romo
- Date: 1998
- Summary: To determine the effects of grazing on tiller cold tolerance, Kowalenko and Romo measured survival of northern wheatgrass (Agropyron dasystachyum syn. Elymus lanceolatus) tillers mowed at different times during the grazing season and exposed to different temperatures and lengths of cold stress. In general, mowed tillers had greater survival rates than control (un-mowed) tillers, and as the temperature decreased and the length of time under cold stress increased, tiller survival decreased. The greater survival of mowed tillers was unexpected and was p ...

- Title: Regrowth and rest requirements of northern wheatgrass following defoliation
- Journal: Journal of Range Management
- Authors: B. L. Kowalenko, and J. T. Romo
- Date: 1998
- Summary: Northern wheatgrass (Agropyron dasystachyum, syn. Elymus lanceolatus) plants were mowed at various times during the grazing season and the amount of time required to recover to pre-defoliation biomass levels was measured, in an effort to provide grazing managers with the best management plan for northern wheatgrass dominated pastures. The number of degree-days required for recovery averaged about two growing seasons and was inversely related to the number of days that grazing was delayed after May 1st. In general, plots mowed early in the season took ...

- Title: Fringed sagebrush response to sward disturbances: Seedling dynamics and plant growth
- Journal: Journal of Range Management
- Authors: Y. Bai, J. T. Romo
- Date: 1996
- Summary: To determine the response of fringed sagebrush (Artemisia frigida Willd.) to different types of disturbance, vegetation and soil measurements were recorded for two years following tilling, clipping, litter removal, and a combination of clipping and litter removal. In general, precipitation and coinciding soil moisture levels played the most important role in the emergence and survival of fringed sagebrush seedlings. When precipitation was low, emergence and survival of fringed sagebrush seedlings was also low, even in disturbed areas. While there was no significant effe ...

- Title: Foraging ecology of bison and cattle on a mixed prairie: Implications for natural area management
- Journal: Ecological Applications
- Authors: G. E. Plumb, and J. L. Dodd
- Date: 1993
- Summary: Researchers measured the foraging behavior of bison and cattle on recently burned rangelands in the northern mixed prairie of northcentral South Dakota for three years to determine the differences between the two. Cattle and bison moderately grazed each burned pasture from June to early October. Throughout the grazing season forage species were collected and analyzed for nutritional quality and fecal samples were collected to determine diet composition. ...
