Title: The impact of buffer strips and stream-side grazing on small mammals in southwestern Wisconsin

Summary: Chapman and Ribic looked at the effect of buffer strips, farming and different grazing regimes on the presence of small mammal species in southwest Wisconsin. Small mammals were overwhelmingly more abundant in the stream-side buffer strips than in the MIRG (managed intensive rotational grazing) or crop field (corn and soybean). Even though the MIRG plots provided ample cover when they were in the rest stage, the small mammal numbers were still much lower than the undisturbed buffer strips. Dense nest cover (DNC) was achieved by planting new grass species to help aid the establishment of more nesting ducks. When switched to a rotational grazing system, nesting success increased in idle pastures, but not in the DNC pastures the first year. Summary: In this study, Liebig et al. measured soil chemical properties and nitrous oxide emissions from a crested wheatgrass (Agropyron desertorum) pasture that had been grazed for 74 years and native pastures that had been moderately or heavily grazed for 90 years. The soil in the crested wheatgrass pasture had greater bulk density and particulate organic matter but lower soil mineral concentrations, cation exchange capacity, and pH than the native pastures.
