| Caption: "Second No. 3, an equipment special (deadheading Pullmans), derailed at 80 miles per hour on a 40 mile-per-hour curve, about a mile and a half east of Logan, Montana, on November 22, 1945, three days before this photo was taken. The locomotive is Class Z-8 no. 5132. Engineer Ray W. Spaulding and head brakeman Davis were killed. Spaulding was only 26 years old. Conductor Minor, the fireman, and the rear brakeman survived. The fireman quit railroading after this. The huge 4-6-6-4 flew so far from the track, the wreckers could barely reach it." | |
