Diamond and Caldor 7 Diamond Springs Calif 1938 RWB The identity of photographer RWB is unknown to the cataloger This is probably a negative that Nixon obtained in trade The locomotive is a Shay, characterized by vertical cylinders on the right side of the boiler These cylinders transfer power to the small drivers via beveled gears and a long driveshaft A Shay can negotiate very sharp curves, very rough track and very steep grades, making the design a favorite for logging railroads such as the Diamond and Caldor The D&C is located on the western slope of the Sierra Mountains in the

SP 1458 E23 Cook 1900 RWB, whose identity is unknown to the cataloger This is a negative for which Nixon must have traded Unlike other negs obtained from RWB, this one has no information as to date and place, but the engine house looks to the cataloger like one at Sausalito, and the next photo in the numbering series is an RWB shot at Sausalito, so the probability is that the location is Sausalito and the date is 1938 Sausalito is the southern terminus of the Northwestern Pacific Railroad, which was at this time an SP subsidiary and which often leased older and smaller SP power
