The eastbound local freight makes a dramatic exit from Polson en route to Missoula. The exhaust from the steam locomotive reminds one of the cotton stuffing exhausts model railroaders would use when photographing their layouts. No cotton here, just a hard working steam engine on a cold winter day.

Logan has one of its more exciting moments as the westbound North Coast Limited makes its scheduled pause and transfer connecting passengers to the Helena train. The power is one of NP's 10 A-2 Northerns, built by Baldwin in 1934.

A Mikado and a Pacific are making a diverging move at an unknown location on the northern edges of the Union Pacific. It is an unusual combination of power, and probably means that one of the engines is being relocated to an area of greater need.

NP 1781, Class W-3 on Train No. 844 at Polson, MT. Considering this photo was taken in Decemberember, it appears crew may have secured their Christmas trees during this trip to Polson, as it looks like two Christmas trees are tied to the front of the locomotive..
