Soil bulk density as influenced by grazing intensity and soil type on a shortgrass prairie site

Summary of Methods: Previous research suggests that soil bulk density can affect infiltration rate, runoff, erosion and growth of plants. In this study, Van Haveren determined soil bulk density on fine and coarse textured soils in pastures that were lightly, moderately, or heavily grazed. Grazing intensity did not affect soil bulk density on coarse textured soils, but bulk density was greater under heavy grazing pressure on fine textured soils. These results indicate that light and moderate grazing are most suited to pastures that contain fine textured soils. This study and previous research suggest that heavy grazing, in pastures containing fine textured soils, may negatively affect soil hydrologic characteristics.
