Using Community-Based Participatory Research to Address Indigenous Health

This chapter focuses on multiple ways to engage Indigenous communities in the creation, implementation, and continued maintenance or sustainability of interventions and programs that are grounded in the local culture and driven by the local community. Chapter 1 briefly referred to Paulo Freire’s work from the mid-twentieth century that introduced the right to question outside control of knowledge. This became the foundation for participatory action research (PAR), which was defined as “a cycle of engaging teams in a process of reflection and action to bring about change.”
