It's hard getting off a locomotive while facing the camera. The rulebook would frown on this dismount technique, but today there's no one here but us railfans. A friend leaves the cab of Anaconda Shay 5

This dismount looks a little better, sort of facing the engine, well, really, the camera, while backing down the steps from the cab. It is a much safer way of exiting the cab of Shay 5 at the Anaconda sawmill at Bonner MT

Putting things in perspective, a man overshadows a locomotive but is dwarfed by its smokestack. Jack Hoover rides the pilot of a Shay

Shays were off centered creatures. The heavy weight of the gearing on the right side made it necessary to shift the boiler to the left, as is dramatically apparent in this view of Anaconda engine 5.

I'm ready for my closeup, Mr. Nixon. The diesel has pulled away and a Shay is ready for the limelight and the official photographs on the Missoula turntable

A Shay, weathered from years in the woods, poses on a turntable, a luxury it probably seldom used during its career on private industrial railroads. Not impressive by the standards of the power that used to call this roundhouse home, but it still is a steam engine.

Some local railroadmen take this opportunity to pose with the steam locomotive, a Shay visiting Missoula for minor repair and restoration. The walls behind the engine suggest that the engine servicing area is going through some post steam era demolition.
