Nixon Railroad: Northern Pacific Railway Caption: "Second No. 3, an equipment special (deadheading Pullmans), derailed at 80 miles per hour on a 40 mile-per-hour curve, about a mile and a half east of Logan, Montana, on November 22, 1945, three days before this photo was taken. The locomotive is Class Z-8 no. 5132. Engineer Ray W. Spaulding and head brakeman Davis were killed. Spaulding was only 26 years old. Conductor Minor, the fireman, and the rear brakeman survived. The fireman quit railroading after this. The huge 4-6-6-4 flew so far from the track, the wreckers could barely reach it." |

Nixon Railroad: Northern Pacific Railway Caption: "Two new, 250-ton wreckers pull the tender of Class Z-8 4-6-6-4 no. 5132 back toward the "High Line" just east of Logan, Montana. The "low Line" (removed in 1957) is located a short distance behind the photographer. Second No. 3, an equipment special (deadheading Pullmans), had derailed at 80 miles per hour on a 40 mile-per-hour curve three days earlier. Engineer Ray W. Spaulding and head brakeman Davis were killed. Spaulding was only 26 years old, a newly promoted engineer. Cause of accident: excessive speed, probably the result of Spaulding's inexperience and loss of situational awareness with respect to the curve. The accident happened at the end of a long tangent. Time of accident: 8:20 a.m. Weather: clear." |

The fireman survived by hanging onto the left-side window frame as the huge locomotive careened off the track and overturned. The fireman quit railroading after this. The huge 4-6-6-4 flew so far from the track, the wreckers could barely reach it." |

Class Z-8 4-6-6-4 no. 5132 will soon be retrieved by two 250-ton wreckers. Engineer Ray W. Spaulding and head brakeman Davis were killed in this spectacular derailment. The huge 4-6-6-4 flew so far from the track, the wreckers could barely reach it. The track in the background is the "Low Line," a river grade line built in 1909 for eastbound freight trains, which allowed them to avoid steeper grades on the "High Line." " |
