Date: March 08, 1941 Location: Muir, MT Photographer: R Railroad: Northern Pacific Railway Caption: "NP second #1 5109 near Muir 3-8-41 Train #1 is the west bound North Coast Limited from St Paul to Seattle, and business at the time must have been good, as this is the second section of the train. It is being pulled by a class Z-6 4-6-6-4 built by Alco in 1937 at Schenectady The men called them "Malley's," but this was in error. Mallet's (named for Anatole Mallet, the French inventor of articulated compound engines) are compounds, exhausting the high pressure steam from the cylinders on the rear engine into huge low pressure cylinders on the front engine, thus using the same steam twice. The Z-6's use high pressure steam in all cylinders. It is somewhat unusual to see a Z-6 in passenger service, but it did happen from time to time. Muir is on the east slope of Bozeman Pass, just short of the tunnel. This is not a Nixon photo, but is one taken by someone who's first initial is R The rest of his initials have been omitted from the copy of Nixon's photo roster" |
