Nixon Railroad: Northern Pacific Railway Caption: "NP 217-1529 Near Brisbin 9/12/40 This view is of NP's passenger train from Livingston MT to the entrance to Yellowstone National Park at Gardiner MT The third car back, with the big windows, is an open air car built specifically for service in the "Park Train." According to Warren McGee, the railroaders called it "the rubberneck car." 1529 is a class W 2-8-2 built by ALCO in 1905 at their Brooks works It is an oil burner, unusual on the Rocky Mountain Division, but deemed less conducive to fire setting than a coal-fired engine, a major consideration that close to Yellowstone Park When the tourist season was over and wet weather returned to the area, 1529 would be transfered out to the Tacoma Division, where it saw service on the Grays Harbor branch This was a recurring cycle of service for 1529 The trees in the background are on the banks of the Yellowstone River" |
