McGee Railroad: Northern Pacific Railway Caption: "NP2434 Jamestown 5-29-40 Warren R McGee photo 2434 is a class T 2-6-2 "Prairie" built by Alco in 1907 at their Brooks works. NP bought 150 of these engines, which proved in service to be inadequate in mountainous territory, as could be inferred from the name "Prairie." Consequently they were not used on the west end, except as stationary boilers, but were used on the east end on the branch lines and in switcher service. Thirteen were given superheaters and other improvements as they were rebuilt into class T-1. Another six were rebuilt into class W-4 2-8-2s, used largely in switcher service. A few of the T's lasted until the end of steam in the Twin Ports area." |
