Ron wrote Verne Alexander: "I made a special trip from Livingston to Lewiston to get a shot of this engine as it was the last Class E-3 in service and I wanted it pretty bad. Middle of the winter and snowing, then the train from Grangeville was late so I had to shoot the 347 in snow and nearly dark. [Ron later wrote:] Yes, I went by rail Livingston to Lewiston and up until about the 1940's made all of my trips by rail--and most of them since then although I could use company automobiles from about 1946 on, which was often convenient.....and inexpensive. The Class E engines put in about 10 to 15 years of main line passenger service but after the P's arrived starting in about 1898, the E's went to the locals and branch line. I understand the P's were built mainly for the North Coast Limited which started service in 1900, but they were replaced by the Q's which started showing up about 1903. And of course many of the Q's were replaced with A's starting in 1926. The S and R engines were pretty much the same, and not too much outstanding about them, mostly light freight service, branch lines and mixed trains. Class S-3 and S-4 were used on passenger trains for a time, but not the others to any extent." |
