This train ran from Missoula to Paradise via the Rocky Mountain Division's Fifth Subdivision, nicknamed variously by crews as "the low line" (for its river grade along the Clark Fork) or "the snake" (because of its numerous curves). The Sixth Subdivision, known as "the high line," extended bewteen DeSmet and Paradise, via Evaro hill and Dixon. Through passenger trains operated via the high line, and most freights operated via the low line. Although there were places along the low line that permitted higher speeds, most freight trains operated at a steady 35-40 miles per hour. The high number and close proximity of these curves didn't allow a tonnage freight sufficient distance to accelerate much above these speeds. This line was very scenic, causing more than one young fireman to get himself into trouble by "gawking" out the window instead of tending the fire."
