The engines shown in this view are for use as helpers up the pass. While the scan does not support the reading of numbers these engines are quite likely class Y-3 2-8-0's built by Alco at their Schenectady works in 1901 and 1903. The turntable is of the "Armstrong" variety meaning that the crew got on the ground and shoved the table around by means of poles extending from each end of the table. One of these poles can be observed at the end of the table in the middle of the photo in front of the sixth man from the left."

The engines shown in this view are for use as helpers up the pass. While the scan does not support the reading of numbers, these engines are quite likely class Y-3 2-8-0's built by Alco at their Schenectady works in 1901 and 1903. One of the engines is moving onto the table with its cylinder cocks open to expel excess condensation that might damage the cylinder head. The turntable is of the "Armstrong" variety, meaning that the crew got on the ground and shoved the table around by means of poles extending from each end of the table. One of these poles can be observed at the right end of the table, where the second man from the right is holding on to it as part of his pose. Nixon identifies this photo as having the "same" data as RVN13494. However a close look at the roundhouse roof reveals that two of the stacks are different from the originals shown in the other photo."

The train is headed east, up Stampede Pass. 1539 is a class W 2-8-2 built in 1905 by Alco in their Brooks works, part of NP's second order of this class of locomotive. At this point in time it would be NP's most powerful locomotive class. Note the wood spoke pilot. "

Date: During 1905  Location: Lester, WA Photographer: Ron V. Nixon Railroad: Northern Pacific Railway Caption: "NP passenger train, with helper 1216 on the point. The road engine is unidentified. It has the same lines and wheel arrangement as class Y-3 1216 (Alco, Brooks, 1905), but does not have the air pump on the right side. Lester, WA about 1905 Copy negative from Fred, identity unknown. Note the plow-like sheet metal on the side of the wood spoke pilot. The train is headed east, up the west slope of Stampede Pass, and has just pulled away from the Lester depot. The depot is down the track from the coal dock, which is the large structure looming behind the train. The identity of the train is not given, but note the truss rod refrigerator car between the tender of the road engine and the RPO car. In this time frame the RPO and other cars would have been constructed of wood, steel cars not coming along until about 1915."

The 3005 is a member of class Z. This is the first group of articulated locomotives acquired by NP, a 2-6-6-2 compound built by Baldwin in 1907. It is a copy of a the GN class L, which accounts for the Bel Paire firebox . The 16 engines in this class were mostly used as helpers on NP's mountain passes. 3005 is based at Lester and helps trains up the west slope of Stampede Pass. Note the white flags on the pilot deck, designating an extra train. Light helpers, lone engines returning to the base of the grade, carried markers and had to be treated as an extra train by dispatchers."

Fred is on top of the coal dock to get this shot. The depot is in the center of the photo, and the roundhouse and turntable are out of view to the right, behind the depot. This is a busy time in Lester. There are two eastbound freight trains waiting to climb Stampede pass. The engine on the left is probably a helper waiting to be put on one of the freights. Note that there is some baggage and/or express being handled on the passenger platform."

The rear end helper has been put on at Lester, and is probably a class Y-3 2-8-0 of 1903 or 1905 vintage. The man on the left is doing a "roll-by," i.e. he is observing the train for any apparent defects as it leaves."

Nixon Railroad: Northern Pacific Railway Caption: "NP 1219 at Lester, WA about 1911 Copy negative from Fred, identity unknown. 1216 is part of the second group of class Y-3 2-8-0 locomotives built by Alco at their Brooks works in 1903. They had relatively small drivers, which made them relatively slow, but quite powerful. They were used as helper engines and switchers. Note how the pilot has been modified to a plow configuration. There is no lettering on the tender, and the engine number under the cab side window is covered with pieces of glass fitted into a frame attached to the side of the cab. These are concessions to how dirty helper engines get when shoving in Stampede Tunnel. The engine on the adjacent track, 1504, is a class W 2-8-2, built by Alco at their Brooks works in 1904. It is probably the road engine on a freight train."
