Date: March 06, 1946
Location: Drummond, MT
Photographer: Ron V. Nixon
Railroad: Northern Pacific Railway
Caption: "Damage to cars after Extra 5121 West rear-ended the main line local, Extra 1816 West, at Drummond, MT. This accident resulted indirectly from the events surrounding the derailment of wrecker 47 east of Missoula (see RVN09581-09595). Missoula engineer Charles F. Reinke and his fireman had been on a layover in Helena when they were called to take Helena wrecker no. 37 to Missoula to help re-rail wrecker 47. In the meantime, officials decided to use a small wrecker from the Missoula car shop to assist wrecker 27 for that job, so Reinke and his fireman were stopped at Garrison and sent back to Helena. Then, after returning to Helena, they were called short of their legal rest period to handle Extra 5121 West. According to railroad officials, as Reinke approached Drummond he and his fireman had probably fallen asleep and missed block signals protecting the rear of Extra 1816 West. Extra 1816 West's conductor looked out the back of his caboose just in time to see the high speed approach of Extra 5121 West, so he ran into the nearby field. His brakemen were already on the ground giving signals for switching moves they were making at Drummond. The big Z-7 4-6-6-4 type locomotive plowed into the local's wooden caboose at high speed. There were only minor injuries to the crews involved. Conductor Emil Berglin was in charge of Extra 5121 West. Engineer Elmer Walkup and Conductor Malcom McCauley were handling the local."

Locomotive no. 5121 is being re-railed by the wrecker in the distance."
