The National Hotel, which was built starting in 1883, was not structurally stable and Mammoth Hot Springs Hotel now sits on the same place. Liberty Cap was named in 1871 by the Hayden Survey party as it resembled peaked caps worn during the French Revolution. Geologists believe it is a hot spring that was clogged and dried up and may be 2,500 yrs old.
