Known as one of Bozeman's richest man, making his fortune in gold in Virginia City. He made a risky cattle drive from Texas to Montana, inspiring the book, "Lonesome Dove." He opened one of Bozeman's first banks, owned a flour mill, was a real estate magnate, and donated land to start Montana Agricultural College. With his son, Walter P, they built the Walter P.
