Item Title  Mr. Hans Behring told to Doctor McGill 10-11-39 Creator  McGill, Caroline, 1879-1959 Abstract  Dr. Caroline McGill interview with Mr. Hans Behring of Helena, State Land Agent. Behring homesteaded near Ft. Ellis, c.1895. He helped make maps of Butte, Deer Lodge, Missoula and Helena. Sold his claim for $2500 in 1898. Talks of history of Taylor Fork Cattle Company (1900-1920), about 1500 cattle. Grazed all over Gallatin Canyon and Gallatin Valley and into Madison County. Behring didn't want any history to be published while he was alive. Moved cattle 1915 onto Crow Reservation. Winter of 1919 devastating: they had 23 employees and 6,000 cattle. Mr. Behring later approached Northern Pacific Railroad for lease. Saw Charles Anceny. Behring later leased 70,000 acres from Northern Pacific for grazing and beat out the Forest Service. After bad winter of 1919, sold half interest of company to Ringling (of Ringling Brothers).
