Expedition team included Walter Cooper and George Wakefield (geologists), Peter Koch (civil engineer) and 2 other support people. Team largely looking for railroad possibility through Gallatin Valley and locations for extension lines to Yellowstone National Park. Team headed south and west to Salesville and eventually Madison Valley to YNP; returned home through Salesville. Encountered large wildfire and ventured through in heavy smoke and difficult conditions. Introductory paragraph, followed by W. Cooper diary from August 19 to August 30, 1881.
