Abstract: Ten years of practical experience with electronic transceivers in Switzerland show an increase from 25% to 35% in the chance to survive an avalanche accident, if the victim can be localized with a transceiver. An optimal strategy for the primary search is described by maximizing the chance to have contact between transmitter and receiver and the chance of survival.
