Abstract: The method of avalanche warning in Switzerland is described. It is the duty of the Swiss Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research not only to carry out research work, but also to give ongoing avalanche warnings. For this purpose, Avalanche Bulletins, covering the whole Swiss alpine area have been published during the past fifty years. In this context, the European Avalanche Hazard Scale has been in use since 1993. This five-part scale is described here in detail. It has been shown that above all, younger skiers are not aware of the danger posed by avalanches. More public relations work must therefore be carried out both through courses and in the media. Those in charge of the protection services in mountain regions are also appreciative of precise interpretations of the hazard scale. Verification of avalanche hazard using questionnaires and analysis of avalanche accidents serves to improve avalanche warning.
