Summary of Methods: Vegetative and animal samples were taken over a two year period near Swift Current, Saskatchewan (50° 25' N; 107° 40' W) to determine feeding damage by grasshoppers on kochia plants. Four sites with 10 (10 x 50 m) plots, five kochia dominated plots and five plots on adjacent agricultural lands were established. Samples were taken every two weeks during the summer.
Article Summary / Main Points: Damage to kochia was minimal as compared to other plants while biomass increased with degree days. Insects appear to prefer the older leaves of the plant which may be the reason that the kochia populations were not affected by insect herbivory during this study. There was no difference in the number of insects egg pods found in plots dominated by kochia or the adjacent agricultural land.
Vegetation Types: Not Applicable
MLRA Ecoregions: Not Applicable
Agrovoc Control Words: Grasshoppers Rangelands Weeds
Article Review Type: Refereed
Article Type: Experimental Research
Keywords: insect herbivory, rangeland weed, insect damage, plant biomass, leaf damage, degree days
Annotation: This study looked at insect herbivory and not livestock so has minimal application within this database. These finding are consistant with other studies looking at grasshopper use on kochia.
