Summary of Methods: Frank and Karn correlated vegetation and remote sensing measurements with CO2 flux data to determine which measured parameter was the most accurate predictor of CO2 flux in grazed, ungrazed, and shrub-infested grasslands in the northern great plains. The measured parameters did not vary greatly among the three grassland sites, indicating that CO2 flux and remote sensing data for grazed, ungrazed, and shrub-infested grasslands was similar. However, the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), a remote sensing measurement, had the strongest relationship with CO2 flux. The similarity of CO2 flux and NDVI measurements among grassland sites suggests that NDVI can be used to determining CO2 flux both at individual sites but also on a regional scale.
