Summary of Methods: Fleece of sheared sheep coming off winter range in Juab County, Utah were examined for presence of squarrose knapweed capitula. Viability of collected seeds was measured in greenhouse germination trials.
Article Summary / Main Points: • Capitula of squarrosa knapweed were not found in the belly wool or sides of ewes, as previously thought. • Squarrose knapweed capitula were discovered in the topknot of 73% of sampled ewes. • Germination rate of recovered seeds wad 69%. • Shearing sheep as they come off of squarrose knapweed infested rangeland can significantly limit weed spread.
