Tuesday July 18, 1899. Arose at 5 – Breakfast – Scouts sent out in search of trail – Meantime fun with colt the camp mascot – struck very good trail leading down to the valley – Travelled on this trail till 4 P.M. passing through the canon by Jackass Creek. Camped on Jackass Creek 10 miles from Ennis – Bath in the creek – Beautiful scenery all day – Feeling poorly tonight – We [should] probably not reach Virginia till Thursday so cannot get mail till then – Camp on the terrace at end of canon on border of Jackass Creek (see map) Distance travelled 15 miles Crossed another snow slide today.
