Summary  
Over the past one-hundred years, coyotes have expanded their range to include the eastern United States, eastern Canada, and southern Mexico. Eastern coyotes differ from their western cousins in several ways: behaviorally, developmentally, and physically. Eastern coyotes weigh up to twice as much as their western cousins. What are the reasons for this size difference? Diet? Habitat? Genetics? How did coyotes expand their range so quickly? Introductions? Migrations? Coyote, the Trickster, has much to teach us about coyotes and science itself. Many biologists have turned to the rich Native American tradition of coyote stories for insight. The Trickster's characteristics are found not only in stories, but are reflected in the coyote's natural history as well. Coyote, the eternal Trickster, has stolen his own evolution. In 2001, a study completed by a large group of scientists came to a long-suspected conclusion. The scientific findings have implications not only for the eastern coyote, but also for the coyote's cousin: the wolf. Coyote genetic research has repercussions for wolf recovery in the northeast and changes the entire Canid Family evolutionary history. Two leading coyote biologists: Dr. Robert Chambers and Dr. Robert Crabtree present the coyote's natural history, recent research findings as well as human interactions with the species. Dr. Henrietta Mann, a Southern Cheyenne elder, presents a variety of Coyote Trickster stories.
