This series of documentary films examines how Ivan Doig approached his writing. They are based on interviews conducted by Jean Walkinshaw in 1995, as well as material gleaned from Ivan's diaries and the Ivan Doig Archives by Betty Mayfield. The film is narrated by David Laskin. The first films in the series, Here I was turned and Eloquence of the edge of the world, answer those questions of how and why Ivan became a writer. Work is its own country and Research and memory describe the work ethic that is essential in becoming a good writer. Dance of language, Playing God with character and Dialog, A trademark of character, get into the craft of writing. These films include some of Ivan's book readings to illustrate how he put his techniques to use. Finally, Pulling it all together touches on the business end of getting a book into print. Each of these films can stand alone but seen together they confirm that Ivan truly was a 'clerk and poet, both'.
