Item Title   Winter Brothers--Day 89, day 90 Creator   Doig, Ivan Abstract   The notecards for Winter Brothers are divided into two boxes to reflect the juxtaposed day-by-day journal entries of both James Gilchrist and Ivan Doig, and an additional box to contain the notes for the mechanics of the novel. The journal entries Doig used from James Swan's journals span a period of years (1859+), a much larger time frame than Ivan Doig's (Dec.- Feb., 90 days), creating a "compression" of Swan's material. It's also evident that Doig tore pages from his own pocket notebooks and pasted them to notecards, serving as a kind of Doig journal as well. Of particular interest to Doig were Swan's notes on Polynesian cultures, native NW Coast culture (Haida) and early shipping trade.
