Finding Aid Title: Connie Staudohar Research Papers, 1918-2009 (bulk 1990-2003)
Finding Aid Collection Number: 2587
Date Range of Collection: 1918-2009
Creator of Materials: Staudohar, Connie
Content Description: The Connie Staudohar Research Files consist of documents produced and utilized by Connie Staudohar throughout the course of her historical research in the late 1990s and 2000s, both as an independent historian and a graduate student at Montana State University. The collection reflects her research processes, documenting her research interests as they evolved and overlapped throughout her career. Collection contents primarily consist of materials Staudohar utilized and produced in the course of this work, including handwritten notes, article and manuscript drafts, photo and Xerox copies of primary-source documents from various archival repositories, correspondence, grant applications, 35mm slides, and some primary source materials related to her research. Note that content labeled as 'Photographs' largely consists of photocopies of historical photographs found in various archives. Topical areas covered include the life of Dr. Caroline McGill, tuberculosis and public health in Montana at the turn of the 20th century, the Galen Sanitarium, and, broadly, notable women of Bozeman, particularly female professors at Montana State University. Of particular note are the original documents related to Caroline McGill, including two 5-year diaries and a quantity of original correspondence housed within Don Anderson's Caroline McGill file. Don Anderson was a friend and regular correspondent of McGill in the 1950s, and retained copies of his outgoing letters along with her incoming letters. The undated spiral notebook in Box 7 also appears to be older and the handwriting does not match Staudohar's, though its author is unknown. It is unclear how Staudohar acquired these materials. The collection also contains several items from Staudohar's high school days which reflect an early interest in writing. These include publications from Anaconda High School, which Staudohar both wrote for and helped publish; a 1970 edition of Northwester, a publication of the High School Journalism Institute; and a 1968 issue of Yellow Dog, a San Francisco-based weekly.
