Abstract: Studies in a maritime climate have found hoarfrost occurrence to be related to an inversion climate and topography, which produced high spatial variation of growth. Two dominant hoarfrost growth situations have been discerned. Threshold crystal size necessary for basal shear weakness varied and, was found to be related to old snow roughness and new snow precipitation characteristics.
