Abstract: The Shredblock snow stability test utilizes a snowboard to conduct a loaded column test similar to a Rutschblock test which utilizes skis. A comparison study to determine the relationship of the Shredblock to the Rutschblock was conducted in the San Juan mountains of SW Colorado. The increase of backcountry use and avalanche fatalities by snowboarders necessitates a snow stability test that is a reliable measure of snow stability and is easily performed with a snowboard. Side by side Shredblock and Rutschblock tests were conducted in order to compare numbers for a given failure within the snowpack. Shredblock and Rutschblock numbers are strongly correlated with a Spearman R ofO.74 (p
