Abstract: Statistical models of different types have been used in avalanche forecasting. This paper provides a comparison of several types of models in application to the issue of road closure in Little Cottonwood Canyon. These model performances are contrasted with those of professional forecasters in the canyon who make road closure decisions. A variety of methods are presented which address the issues of statistical modeling and evaluation. A statistical model improves forecasting performance.
