Abstract: During the winters of 2004/05 and 2005/06, I field-tested the prototype and second generation portable, capacitance-type snow sonde in an avalanche forecasting study plot environment. The goals of this research project were multi-fold. The first was to validate the probe’s ability to provide a statistically accurate snow density profile at a level equivalent or better than can be currently accomplished by existing methods. A second goal was to investigate the probe’s ability to provide additional avalanche forecasting information relevant from a study plot perspective such as layer stratigraphy and weak interfaces. The investigation took place primarily in the Columbia Mountains of British Columbia. This extended abstract provides an overview of the research effort.
