Abstract: Acoustic emission monitoring of the snow pack indicates that 1) acoustic emission rate is related to settlement, creep and snow loading rate; 2) snow attenuation values are a function of snow density, frequency of the sensor and snow anisotropy; 3) skiing activity produces erratic acoustic emission activity; 4) avalanche releases were identifiable.
