Abstract: Automated avalanche detection systems (AADS) have been utilized by a wide range of operations but have only recently been adopted by North American ski resorts. We look to share our experiences incorporating Radar Detection into a ski resort operation and highlight some of the unique benefits and challenges of using detection in an environment where high skier volume, snowcat traffic and other resort infrastructure is present in the monitoring area. This poses a challenge to accurate monitoring not found in many past radar installations where the area being monitored is more remote and the avalanche size to impact the resource being protected is typically much larger.
