Abstract: Helicopter operations in mountainous winter environments present unique hazards that are often under-addressed in standard mountain flying curricula. While technical guidance for landing on snow is abundant, there remains a critical information gap regarding safe operations within the specific "imperfect world" of active avalanche terrain. Utilizing over 25 combined years of high-altitude mountain flight experience and case study analysis, the study identifies two key directives for operational safety. It examines the mechanical relationship between helicopter weight, whether dispersed as rotor wash or concentrated on small surface areas like skids or wheels, and snowpack failure in buried weak layers. The study further explores heuristic traps which pilots may be more subject to, such as familiarity and the "expert halo," which frequently skew risk assessments in professional aviation and rescue contexts. Our paper establishes a framework for pilot and crew awareness, emphasizing the necessity of formal avalanche training and the application of technical decision-making to mitigate the inherent dangers of these environments.
