Abstract: A significant disparity exists between the content of published avalanche forecasts and users’ understanding thereof. Avalanche forecasts contain intricate information, leaving many users uncertain about how to translate it into actionable decisions, particularly when choosing routes in mountainous terrain. In this study, we use an online experimental design to investigate if a map application, in which the forecast is visualized in a map, makes it easier for recreationists to identify safer route options in comparison to other commonly used map tools. We discuss benefits and potential dangers of depicting avalanche danger on map applications.
