Abstract: It all started with a question, What’s that? It’s a avalauncher is shoots explosive rounds up to 2000m. Manuel Riesterer of Inauen Schatti who asked the question was looking for a devise to do this type of explosive deployment for his customers in Austria and Switzerland. In Europe there was currently in use Avalanche Pipes and a French avalauncher which has not gained traction outside of France. The avalauncher has been an integral tool for avalanche control since its development in 1960. With the avalaunchers ability to shoot multiple targets from a single location in a timely manner getting roads, ski runs and railways open faster at a reduced cost from other systems. Throughout the last 54 years of the avalauncher many advancements in safety, explosive rounds and operational range. In this paper I plan to cover the history of the avalauncher as well as the process of getting it CE certified in Europe, developing a explosive projectile round for Europe and the setup and experiences of the first units in Europe.
