Abstract: In order to elucidate the motion mechanism of avalanches containing sediment, it is necessary to make experimental observations on how the shape of the avalanche changes during flow and how sediment is distributed in the avalanche during flow. In this study, we focused on the microwave Doppler sensor, which has been used in the field of non-destructive inspection, in order to understand how much energy of the sediment is contributed to the avalanche flow by mixing the sediment with the snow. The microwave Doppler sensor used in this study is 24 GHz band. It is known that the reflection coefficients obtained with microwaves in this frequency band are different for snow and metals. However, there has not been any measurement system constructed for the purpose of detecting the presence of sediment inside the snow avalanche. Therefore, an experiment was conducted to irradiate snow and sand samples with microwaves, and a method to quantitatively evaluate the reflection coefficients obtained was investigated. Furthermore, to validate a measurement system for detecting sediment inside an avalanche, a similar evaluation was conducted using a sample of snow on top of sand. From the above verification, we confirmed the possibility of identifying the mixing state of sand and snow by determining the reflection coefficient from the microwave irradiation signal.
