Abstract: During fall and early winter of 2022, a deep persistent slab (DPS) formed within the snowpack of central and southern British Columbia that caused multiple avalanche incidents into the spring of 2023. A high-level analysis of weather patterns associated with the creation of this DPS were examined and a connection was found with the less common northerly flow pattern that is associated with the negative phase of the El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO - La Niña) rather than the average southwesterly flow dominated winter pattern over the region. However, since not all required conditions for the formation of a DPS in the region are explained by the expected La Niña pattern, La Niña's relationship with a DPS formation appears to be favourable but not causal.
